You Can’t Predict Postseason

In the AL Wild-Card Round, James Shields faced Jon Lester in a highly anticipated matchup of imported aces — and the Royals eventually won a 9-8 slugfest. Today’s NLCS Game 1 pitted Clayton Kershaw against Adam Wainwright, possibly the two best pitchers in the NL — and the final score was 10-9. And the lowest-scoring playoff game so far, naturally, was a 3-2 win featuring Jason Vargas and Jered Weaver — whose fastballs this year averaged 87 and 86 mph, respectively. It’s been a weird postseason for pitchers; through three of Friday’s games, the best regular-season hurlers have performed worse than average in the playoffs.
