ALDS: Kinsler’s marathons

According to traditional baseball wisdom, one goal of a leadoff hitter is to see lots of pitches. Ian Kinsler certainly did that on Thursday, as his five plate appearances lasted a combined 41 pitches, including a 14-pitch marathon in the third inning that ended in a lineout. (Per Ben Lindbergh, Kinsler’s regular-season plate appearances were actually among the shortest in baseball.) Kinsler may have helped wear down Orioles starter Chris Tillman, but it didn’t do his team much good — the Orioles rolled to a 12-3 win in Game 1 of the ALDS.
